In Algeria, French now persona non grata in schools and public services

The use of French is definitively forbidden in administrations and in education. A new episode of the crisis between Paris and Algiers.

It was a timely note for the celebrations marking the 67th anniversary of the outbreak of the armed struggle on November 1, 1954. Concocted by the Minister of Vocational Education and Training, Yacine Merabi, it orders the exclusive use of Arabic in administrations and in education because «French no longer has its place». This is in addition to the interminable list of prohibitions that have struck “the language of the colonizer” for more than half a century.
